"Ransom came over from Gold'sFit from the recommendation of a friend of ours who ran the Gold'sFit program he was in. He's been with us a little over a year and came over with a fantastic aerobic capacity base, but wanted to make improvements with his Olympic lifting, strength and gymnastics skill set. Because he's a tall dude, he's at a slight mechanical disadvantage with the Olympic lifting and Gymnastics components. But, he's super dedicated and his commitment to improvements have elicited some pretty amazing results in the short time into our CrossFit program. But, we're still trying to teach him to get some power developed when he rows. ;) " - Coach Robert Brown.
How did you discover The Combine [CSC] CrossFit? And how long have you been a member?
I’ve been at the Combine for a little over a year now. Prior to joining I had been doing Gold’sFit for a couple years. It’s kind of like Crossfit-Lite without barbells. As I progressed it started to become less challenging and satisfying so I started to look for something new. One of my good friends and trainer at Gold’s knew Robert and recommended I give the Combine a try. I was hooked after the first week.
What is your exercise history or athletic background?
As a child I played every sport I possibly could. From motorcycles and rodeoing to soccer and baseball, I wanted to do it all. In high school I played football, basketball, track, and golf. I had opportunities to play football at some smaller D2/D3 schools but decided to accept an academic scholarship to a larger school instead and focus on my future. Fitness and exercise have always been a big part of my life and I still enjoy any opportunity to compete. These days I enjoy competing at local Crossfit competitions and intramural sports such as volleyball and flag football. I also try to make it to a few sporting clay tournaments a year.
What has CrossFit at the Combine done for your personally? Physically?
Personally, it’s created many new friendships that I otherwise would not have experienced. The Combine has a great culture and I enjoy throwing down with everyone there. Physically, I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life. Although, at 36, the soreness seems to last a bit longer than it used to. The coaches and the other athletes here push me every day to try to be better, faster, and stronger. I can’t get enough of it.
Who/what inspires/motivates you or why do you workout?
Competition for sure! I think it’s just bred in me. Everything in, and out, of the gym is a competition to me. Whether it be who can fold their laundry and put it away faster to who can shoot more dove on a morning hunt, I’ll make a competition out of it. It drives my wife and family crazy, but they’ve come to just accept it. It’s no different in the gym, and the Combine gives me that outlet to compete every day (my wife thanks you for that ;) . I come in and look at the board and see if I can beat the fastest time that day. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t, but I feel like I learn from it and become better either way.
What is one of your favorite moments you've had in CrossFit?
Watching Adam do 19.2 in a speedo was pretty epic. Props to him for being the only one to follow through with our Open punishments. You are a man of your word my friend!
What fitness accomplishment are you most proud of? Have you hit any recent PR's or achieved any other goal(s) in our outside of CrossFit? Any future goals?
When I joined the Combine I wanted to be able to snatch 225 and clean & jerk 300, and I’m so close to knocking those off the list. Going forward I would like to get better at high-skilled gymnastics and strict movements. My 6’3, 215 lb. frame has made my mid-life quest to becoming a gymnast interesting to say the least.
What are your favorite CrossFit workouts or exercises/movements?
I love the Olympic lifts. I’m always humbled by how technical these movements are, but that’s what makes them fun to learn. I also enjoy sprint style workouts. If I could program the perfect workout for me it would probably include rowing, wall balls and power cleans with a time domain under 15 minutes. Gotta take advantage of the few movements in crossfit that favor us tall people…
When you are not working out, how do you spend your free time?
I love spending time with my family and friends and being around water. We have a two-year-old daughter, Storm, and she is such a joy to experience life with. In the fall and winter, you can usually find me in a deer blind or up in a tree with a bow.
