WORKOUT of the DAY
Mark is the definition of community. His passion and love for CrossFit is inspiring and addictive to others. He is always supportive of others and willing to go out of his way to help out with anything. Since being here he has grown as a competitor, improving his skills such as pull ups, olympic lifts and more. Mark had his ACL replaced 23 months ago, but that didn't stop him from attending classes regularly. We modified exercises appropriately and since his recovery he has dropped his mile time by 1:10, has an OHS of 130# (15# increase), and is able to rope climb again.
How did you discover The Combine / CSC CrossFit?
I've been obstacle racing since 2010 and needed to get stronger on several obstacles. A friend showed me an article about CrossFit and a week later I saw an ad for The Combine in the Community Impact paper. I decided to give it a try because results on my own at LifeTime were not working. Four years later, it's the best fitness decision I've ever made.
What has CrossFit at The Combine done for you personally? Physically?
CrossFit has done many things for me personally and physically. I am an introvert but enjoy time with people I like. The Combine "fit fam" is a place I feel comfortable being uncomfortable because coaches and members have my back. That has helped me learn to push limits, and I believe improved my professional life as well. Physically, I am stronger; much stronger! Few people know I also battle anxiety, but since starting CrossFit, I haven't taken a single pill. The Combine and CrossFit are my stress management solution.
Who inspires/motivates you or Why do you workout?
I have two boys, Danny and Tyler, that inspire me to set an example for a healthy lifestyle. They recently started the kids' classes, and I couldn't be happier to see them kill a WOD and talk about all the ways they would attack it differently while driving home. Also, my health is important to me. Throwing around heavy things and getting beat to a pulp happens to be fun, so it makes it easier to stay motivated. How I look in my birthday suit isn't bad either. ;-)
What "ah ha" moments have you had in CrossFit?
I've had two "ah ha" moments, but the biggest one is the importance of consistency. Consistently coming to class, focusing, and logging my efforts provide 80% of my gains. The second is my capability to do more than I think I can. I may not hit many PRs now that I'm four years into my CrossFit journey but if you ask me whether I think I'll be doing pull-ups at 75 years old - I say, hell yeah!
What fitness accomplishments are you most proud of?
I've had a rough run of injuries including an ACL replacement and lumbar disc injury. Scaling and modifying for over a year has been frustrating at times, but I am proud of not giving into negative thoughts and feeling like I'm 100% again. I'm back to working towards new PRs.
When you are not working out how do you spend your free time?
When I'm not working out, I'm usually coaching or supporting my boys in their athletic pursuits. I also enjoy B-rated horror and sci-fi movies with a good beer or tequila. I hide it pretty well nowadays, but I'm a big nerd when it comes down to it.
What are your three favorite exercises?
My favorite movements - cleans, most kettlebell work, and I feel like I'm the only one at The Combine to say this, running.
